What's the best way to welcome New Year? Cycling of course! In Egypt?
Mauritius? Nooo. If we're talking New Year, we must think of some cold place...
Snow, Frost, Wind, Storms and... Bicycles Danish island "Bornholm"
is quite popular among cyclists from Poland and most probably several other
countries. The island thanks to it's size, location and beautiful views
encourages to either cycle there all the way from home, or rent a bike
there. But everyone chooses to visit Bornholm in Spring or Summer. Well,
early Autumn the latest. So if everyone can do it - an elderly couple,
family with children, a Kazakhan journalist travelling around the world...
we chose to go there not when it's sunny and warm. We chose to go there
when it's not crowded with "Sunday cyclists".. actually when it's not crowded
with cyclists at all. We decided to conquer the island in Winter - when the
winds blow and when rain pours all the time. When the snow freezes on your
goggles, because of the temperature which stays around 0 degrees Celsius.
The worst (best) period - seems to be end of December/beginning of January.
That's why we agreed to spend New Year's Eve and welcome New Year - on Bornholm!
Not only Bornholm... Because of the fact that Bornholm is a
relatively small island, our expedition includes departing from Swinoujscie
in Poland, taking a ferry to Ystad in Sweden and sightseeing along south
coast of that raw country. Afterwards the plan sets us on a ferry from
Ystad to Ronne, the capital of Bornholm. We want to cycle around the
island, across, and actually see everything interesting on this Danish
island. We hope to find some open air New Year's party, or even a
dressing-up party, where we could be treated as dressed up bicycle tourists.
Then, in 2007, we take a ferry back to Ystad, cycle to Malmo - using the longest
route possible, and that's where we split. Morris flies back to London,
Mindex flies back to Warsaw. That's how the plan looks like, although it
holds much more details, as all our trip should take about 5 days.
Sleeping bags and a tent, or hotels?... Good question. We're wondering,
should we make it even more extreme? Should we pay and sleep in warm and cosy
hotels, or better test our endurance and choose the tent? It all depends on
our SPONSORS. If we received a good winter
tent / sleeping bags, we'd be happy to test it in the real winter environment!!
Sponsorship - that's what we need to make our
plan come true. Actually we really need it. That's why we're asking companies
that work in tourist and cycle industry, as well as other, to help us achieve
our goal. Any form of sponsorship is welcome - bicycle parts, clothes, flight
tickets, accessories, panniers/racks, winter tent, winter sleeping bags, tools.
In exchange we're more than happy to include SPONSOR's logo on the expedition's
website, information about the company in media (we're planning to run an
online weblog which would be regularly updated (via mobile mail, including photos,
movies and own thoughts) as well as carrying SPONSOR'S logo on our bikes/clothes.
If we manage to find a Strategic Sponsor - we would agree to incorporate his
company name in our expedition's name. For more information - please click on
SPONSORSHIP section.
